Especially in spring, our mechanics have their hands full with waking up engines from their 'winter sleep'. Besides weak or dead batteries, dirty carburettors are the main cause of difficult or no starting. Because many petrol brands contain various 'environmentally friendly' additives that often leave a sticky residue in the carburettor when the petrol evaporates, channels and nozzles become clogged and floats and throttle needles are impeded in their movement.
However, these problems are not limited to spring - poor engine running can also indicate fouling of the carburetor(s). Disassembly and cleaning is then necessary.
Tip: Prevention is better than cure: in winter, park the engine with an empty carburetor and put a bottle of fuel preservation in the tank at the last fill-up (see elsewhere in our overview)
