When you brake, the brake caliper exerts pressure on the brake pads through the pistons. The pads, in turn, press with great force against the brake disc that rotates with the wheel. The friction between the pads and the brake disc causes the engine to brake.

In theory, a caliper lasts an engine's lifetime, but in practice, it can get stuck due to dirt (brake dust) or rust.

In both cases a caliper needs to be overhauled or replaced. When a caliper is stuck a motorcycle can brake unevenly and that can lead to dangerous situations.
